Creating Your Safe Space: A Prelude to Healing through Design

Navigating through a separation has been a deeply personal journey, and the need for a safe, nurturing space has never been more apparent. Inspired by this experience, I’m working on a book, “Designing for Your Soul: Creating a Safe Space after Separation or Divorce.” This guide aims to help you create a sanctuary during times of transition, focusing on the psychological and physiological impacts of moving into a new environment.

The Essence of a Healing Space

Reflecting on the images from my newly designed apartment, several key elements stand out that embody the vision of creating a safe and healing space:

Sheer Curtains and Natural Light: The sheer curtains in front of the tree-covered balcony create a beautiful backdrop with lots of movement. This natural, ever-changing scenery promotes a relaxing response, allowing you to feel connected to nature even while indoors. The light filtering through these curtains is soft and diffused, contributing to a calming atmosphere.

Color Palette for Healing: The color palette of the apartment is intentionally chosen to support healing. Soft, neutral tones dominate the space, with accents of gentle pastels and earthy shades. These colors are known for their calming effects and ability to reduce stress, creating an environment conducive to relaxation and recovery.

Cozy and Inviting Textures: The use of various textures, such as the plush throw blankets and pillows, adds a layer of comfort and warmth. These elements invite you to sink into the furniture and feel at ease. The tactile experience of soft fabrics can be incredibly soothing during stressful times.

Thoughtful Decorative Elements: Every decorative piece, from the wall hangings to the vases, has been carefully selected to evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. The organic shapes and natural materials used in the decor help to create a harmonious and balanced environment.

Functional Yet Aesthetic Furnishings: The furniture pieces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. The small table and chairs create a perfect nook for enjoying a quiet cup of tea or coffee, fostering moments of solitude and reflection. The layout ensures that the space is both practical and beautiful, supporting everyday activities while maintaining a serene ambiance.

Psychological and Physiological Benefits

Moving into a new space after a separation can be overwhelming. However, intentional design choices can cater to both psychological and physiological needs, promoting overall well-being.

• Psychologically, a well-designed space can provide a sense of control and stability, crucial during times of upheaval. Surrounding yourself with elements that bring joy and comfort can significantly enhance your mood and mental state.

• Physiologically, a calm and serene environment can help lower stress levels and reduce the body’s adrenaline response. Incorporating natural elements and soothing colors can positively impact your body’s responses, fostering relaxation and healing.

My Personal Journey

With just a few days’ notice, I moved into my new apartment and had only a week to transform it into a home before my son moved in. As an interior designer, my instinct was to use design to create a safe haven for us. The process of designing this space was not just about aesthetics; it was about creating a nurturing environment where we could both feel secure and supported.

The photographs capture the transformation of my small apartment into a beautifully designed sanctuary. This space now serves as a testament to the power of design in fostering healing and providing comfort during difficult times.
